Ngā hau e whā, whānau from the four winds
Ō Wairoa Whānau is a community made up of ngā hau e whā, whānau who come from many places, cultures, histories, and whakapapa. Some of us whakapapa Māori to iwi and rohe beyond Tāmaki Makaurau. Some of us are urban Māori who are still finding, learning, or reconnecting with their whakapapa. Some of us are tauiwi, learning how to stand respectfully in this place.
We aim to create a safe, welcoming space where whānau can learn, belong, and grow together. As part of that, we acknowledge and give respect to Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, tangata whenua of this rohe. We honour the mātauranga, tikanga, whakapapa, and mana of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, and seek to learn in a way that is humble, respectful, and grounded in care for the people and place we gather in.
This site was started to support the Waiata Wednesday Rōpū and whānau of Ō Wairoa Marae. It is a whānau-led, marae-supported space, created to help our community learn, practise, and share waiata in a way that is warm, respectful, and easy to join.
This is an unofficial whānau website. It does not speak on behalf of Ō Wairoa Marae Trust, Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, or Auckland Council, but exists to support whānau learning and connection around Waiata Wednesday.
How our rōpū often runs
We meet on Wednesday evenings during the school term, unless notified of a change.
We follow a simple flow:
- Karakia
- Whaikōrero; Speech of welcome
- Waiata tautoko; Supporting waiata
- Whakawhanaungatanga / Pepeha; Introductions and connecting with new whānau
- Pānui; Notices
- Waiata; Singing
- Karakia
The full outline and templates, including pepeha, are in Rauemi.
We also support events that happen at the marae by lending our time, voices, presence and mahi before, during, or after. We will be adding tikanga notes for our new whānau in Rauemi.
Tikanga / Respectful Use
This site is a collection of information that whānau have been given or found that are helpful in our local space as we continue to grow, learn and collaborate together.
We recognise that respectful learning takes time, relationship, and care. As our kaupapa grows and we gather the resources to support it well, we remain open to guidance and will actively seek that guidance as time, capacity, and relationships allow.
Corrections, guidance, and attribution welcome.
